At L-M Equipment Co. Inc., we provide a number of crosscut wood saw options and other sawmill equipment that delivers exceptional performance and reliability. Here is some important information about how to safely and effectively use a crosscut saw.
1. Purchase a saw with fine teeth. You can achieve a smoother cut with finer teeth which is essential to making the process of using the saw much easier. Saws with larger teeth are used for cutting in which accuracy may be sacrificed for faster cutting.
2. Anchor in place the piece you intend to cut on sawhorses or two tables. Clamp or hold down the wood into a position so that it will not move. Carefully mark the location where you intend to make the cut.
3. Your saw should be sharp and not dull. A dull saw makes for a very unpleasant and frustrating sawing experience.
4. Place the end of the piece you’re going to cut about 4 inches or so from the end of the sawhorse. Ensure that the cutting location is off of the sawhorse or two tables and not in between.
5. Take hold of the saw in your dominant hand and use your other hand to secure the wood. Be extra careful to keep your fingers away from the location of the cut.
6. Start cutting while using a straight piece of wood to maintain the alignment of the saw with the line you desire to cut. Gradually draw the blade of the saw on to the mark on the wood at a 45° angle.
7. Repeat this process until a groove starts to develop in the wood.
8. Slowly begin the sawing the wood. You should keep the blade against the wood during the entire process of cutting – do not let the blade remove from the wood.
9. As you cut, use minimum pressure and let the saw handle the work. If you impose too much force, you could cause the saw to get stuck in the wood, and possibly damage the saw as well.
10. Use consistent strokes and allow the saw to do the work as you cut, utilizing the majority of the length of the blade in the cutting process.
11. When you are almost finished, keep sawing and try to avoid breaking the wood. If possible, support the piece being cut with your hand.
12. As you approach the end of the cut, slow down, using less pressure.
